Open Water Scuba Instructor
(OWSI)

Seven Seas Scuba is the Portland/Vancouver area's only PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center with two Course Directors and one IDC Staff Instructor on staff. Outstanding education is one of Seven Seas Scuba's focal points starting from the first levels of scuba training through professional level courses. The OWSI Instructor course is your final step to becoming a PADI Instructor.  As an OWSI Instructor you will have the ability to: 

  • - Independently teach a wide range of PADI programs including core programs such as Discover Scuba Diving, Bubblemakers, Seal Team, Scuba Diver, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, as well as a variety of CPR & First Aid courses
  • - OWSI Instructors can also teach the following Specialty Programs: Project AWARE and Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • - OWSI Instructors are also eligible to obtain additional specialty instructor certifications from a Course Director
  • - Once OWSI Instructors have certified students and taught a variety of courses, they may then be eligible to become a Master Scuba Diver Trainer, IDC Staff Instructor, Master Instructor, or Course Director (prerequisites for each instructor level vary)

Additionally, after successful completion of the OWSI Instructor course, you are qualified to sit for an Instructor Exam (IE). 

  • Class fees - $950 (Combine AI and OWSI courses in a full IDC course for a price break of $1450 and no AI application fee is required)
  • eLearning - $360 for OWSI program or included with full IDC course
  • OWSI Application fee (payable to PADI due at the Instructor Exam) - $120
  • IE fee (payable to PADI due at the Instructor Exam) - $499

    PADI has updated a number of instructor development course materials for 2010. For your reference, these changes have been noted in blue below.

    • PADI Instructor Manual (current PADI dive professionals may download, save, and/or print the new 2010 PADI Instructor Manuals from the PADI Pros Site for free)
    • Presentation Outlines and Knowledge Review Answer Keys for the OW, AOW, Rescue, and Divemaster programs (current PADI dive professionals may download, save, and/or print these from the PADI Pros Site for free)

* We will help you in pricing the materials you determine you will need.  Depending on the materials in need, some may be available for use by you during your course, others may be available for purchase.

The PADI Instructor OWSI course is a full 5-6 day course.  The course consists of knowledge development through on-line sudy, independent study, dive theory exams, lectures, various types of workshops, confined water skill review and assessment, candidate presentations (classroom, pool, and open water), rescue assessment, and more.

Please be reminded that upon successful completion of this course and receipt of certification from PADI, you will need to notify your professional liability insurance carrier to have your policy modified to reflect your new professional level before you take on any OWSI duties.  

To be eligible as an OWSI Instructor Candidate with Seven Seas Scuba, the following pre-requisites must be met:

  • you must be at least 18 years or older to start the program
  • You must be able to show proof of at least 100 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation
  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • You must hold a current CPR certification
  • You must be a PADI Assistant Instructor (or be a scuba instructor in good standing with another recognized training organization for at least 6 months to enter the OWSI program as a "cross-over")
  • You must be a current CPR Instructor or have an EFR Instructor Course scheduled
  • You must hold current professional liability insurance
  • You must have a completed Medical Statement (signed by a physician) dated within the past 12 months (note: you will also be asked to provide this if you decide to complete a full IDC and sit for an Instructor Exam)
