Assistant Instructor

Assistant Instructor is the next step in your professional dive career introducing you to the world of teaching. 

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is a conventional sit-down class including skill work in confined and open water.  It is designed as a full 3-4 day course, but can be scheduled in smaller segments over a period of time, i.e. 2 weeks, to better suit people's work schedules or portions of the course may be completed via eLearning for a slightly higher course fee.  The course consists of knowledge development through independent study, lectures, various types of workshops, confined water skill review and assessment, candidate presentations (classroom, pool, and open water), a final Standards and Procedures exam, and more.

As an Assistant Instructor you will have the ability to:

  • - Teach Open Water Diver academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
    - Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
    - Teach Open Water Diver pool presentations under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
    - Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
    - Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
    - Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences

Assistant Insructors may additionally qualify for the following:

  • - Teach Emergency First Response (EFR) after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course
  • - Teach the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Course successful completion of a Specialty Instructor Course with a Course Director
  • - Teach the PADI Equipment Specialist Specialty Course successful completion of a Specialty Instructor Course with a Course Director  

Additionally, after successful completion of the Assistant Instructor course, you are qualified to attend the Opn Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) training portion of a PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). 

  • Course fee - $600
  • Assistant Instructor Application fee (payable to PADI due at the end of the AI program) - $79
  • Course materials required and not included in the class fees
    PADI has updated a number of instructor development course materials for 2010. For your reference, these changes have been noted in blue below.

    • PADI Instructor Manual (current PADI dive professionals may download, save, and/or print the new 2010 PADI Instructor Manuals from the PADI Pros Site for free)
    • Presentation Outlines and Knowledge Review Answer Keys for the OW, AOW, Rescue, and Divemaster programs (current PADI dive professionals may download, save, and/or print these from the PADI Pros Site for free)

    • PADI Pro Logbook (new in 2010, this is included in the DM crew-pak)
    • All Updated Course Manuals (Open Water thru Divemaster)
    • Recreational Dive Planners (eRDPml and Table) including Instructions for Use Booklets

* We will help you in pricing the materials you determine you will need.  Depending on the materials in need, some may be available for use by you during your course (keep in mind that all listed materials are also required if you plan to continue on to Instructor), others may be available for purchase.

Please be reminded that upon successful completion of this course and receipt of certification from PADI, you will need to notify your professional liability insurance carrier to have your policy modified to reflect your new professional level before you take on any Assistant Instructor duties.  

To be eligible to participate in the Assistant Instructor Candidate at Seven Seas Scuba, the following pre-requisites must be met:

  • you must be at least 18 years or older to start the program
  • You must be a PADI Divemaster (or qualifying certification from another organization)
  • You must hold current professional liability insurance
  • You must hold a current CPR certification
  • You must be able to show proof of at least 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation
  • You must have a completed Medical Statement (signed by a physician) dated within the past 12 months (note: you will also be asked to provide this if you decide to complete a full IDC and sit for an Instructor Exam)

Being an active Assistant Instructor leads you into the world of instructing and for some it will be the first step in continuing their education toward becoming PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.  For others, it will be a natural position to achieve a greater involvement in the experiences and education of recreational scuba divers.  We look forward to helping you reach your professional goals.  Please contact Nicolle to set up a consultation time to discuss the Assistant Instructor course in more detail.
